I have started collecting silver and want to know what is the difference in .925 and sterling silver?

a lot of things are marked .925 and then most table ware is just sterling silver. is this an alloy or is it real silver.is there a test for this like gold? things can look like silver from the tarnish, especially tea pots and serving dishes/dinner ware sets but i dont want to get beat... help
