Question about a Directv receiver i want to hook up.?

We have a directv receiver that we want to hook up to a tv. i hooked up all the wires and im getting the directv on my tv but no picture. like i can change the channel and it can tell me whats on that channel right now but the screen is black. i have an access card in the receiver and it says that the card is valid. we have to receivers hooked up that we are paying for and getting directv on and i want to know if their is anyway i can set this receiver up so i can watch directv on it but not pay for having the other receiver. is there anyway this can be done or will i just have to pay monthly for the extra receiver? it is not a tivo or dvr its a hughes trusurrond by shs . . . or something like that. thanks
